Work Permit

Most foreign nationals (unless exempted) require a work permit to work in Canada. They are generally two main types of work permits: closed/ employer specific work permits and open work permits. Not all foreign nationals are eligible for an open work permit.

If you are not eligible to be granted an open work permit you will need a valid job offer by a Canadian employer to start the process and this job offer has to be accompanied by a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This LMIA is applied for by the Canadian employer who has to prove that they can find no Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents to fill that job position. Once a positive LMIA is granted, the foreign national will use this and other required documentation to apply for a work permit through Immigration.

You must find out if you are eligible to work in Canada without a work permit, if you are eligible for an open work permit or if you require a job offer and LMIA before applying for a work permit.
